Reserves FAQ for Students PDF Print E-mail

What are Library Reserves?

Library Reserves are items that your professors have specifically asked the library to make available for all members of your class. Physical reserve items (books, DVD’s, etc.) have shorter loan periods and higher fines than other library materials and must be checked out at the Circulation Desk.

Can I access Reserve items electronically?

As of the fall of 2006, most photocopied reserve items are now available online. To access these materials:

  • Go to the Library catalog's Reserves section.
  • Type in the last name of your instructor or your course ID (i.e. ENGL121)
  • Click on the name of your instructor or course
  • Click on the Reserve Detail link beneath the specific class in which you are enrolled.
  • Choose the item that you would like to access.
  • Click on the Link for this item.
    • If you are accessing the item from off campus, you may need to login with your UTCID and password.
    • Most items are available as PDF files. You will need the most recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to view these files.

Where do I go to access Reserves that are not available online?

To access physical reserve items, go to the library’s Circulation Desk on the first floor. You will need your valid MOCS Card to use these items.

Where can I view or listen to Audiovisual Reserve Items that are limited to “in library use only”?

There are two viewing stations and two listening stations available on the first floor of Lupton Library. These stations are available to all library patrons on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also, DVD’s and CD’s can be viewed/listened to on the library’s laptop computers (available at the Circulation Desk). At startup, these computers are muted so as not to disturb other library patrons. Assistance in turning on laptop sound is available from any Circulation Desk staff member.

With either of these options, you can bring your own headphones from home or check out headphones at the library’s Circulation Desk. Groups of students sometimes check out a group study room so that they can listen to or view material together.

For how long can I check out physical reserve items, and how many can I check out at one time?

Most reserve materials are available for 3 hours in the library only. Others are available for 24 hours, 3 days, or 7 days. Loan periods for reserve items are set at the discretion of the faculty member. The maximum number of physical reserve items that can be checked out at one time is 5.

What happens if I turn in reserve items late?

Fines on reserve items accrue at $0.25 per hour, so it is always best to return your materials on time.
