The
Special Collections of Lupton Library holds several collections
of Shakespeareana including over one hundred rare 18th and 19th
century etchings, engravings, and gravures of various scenes from
the plays of William Shakespeare. Many of the engravings are the
result of the efforts of John Boydell (1719-1804) who established
a London gallery in 1789 featuring paintings of scenes from Shakespeare's
plays by many of the most eminent artists in Great Britain. Many
of these were subsequently turned into engravings for folio editions
published in the early 1800s.
