Illustration of Shakespeare

William Shakespeare

British Dramatist and Poet

(1564-1616)

The Special Collections of Lupton Library holds several collections of Shakespeareana including over one hundred rare 18th and 19th century etchings, engravings, and gravures of various scenes from the plays of William Shakespeare. Many of the engravings are the result of the efforts of John Boydell (1719-1804) who established a London gallery in 1789 featuring paintings of scenes from Shakespeare's plays by many of the most eminent artists in Great Britain. Many of these were subsequently turned into engravings for folio editions published in the early 1800s.

This online exhibit will feature 25 etchings from the collection. For a larger-resolution view of these etchings, please click on the image.
