The Special Collections hold many items and collections relating to the arts, including literature, music, theater and the visual arts. These primary source materials are available for students, faculty, and researchers in their research and curriculum. Collections include two separate collections of 19th century prints of scenes from the plays of William Shakespeare. Also included are etchings of Civil War scenes from Harper's Weekly, published during the American Civil War. Two collections feature art work of local artist, writer, and naturalist Emma Bell Miles (1879-1919). These can be found in the Kay Baker Gaston Collection and the Jean Miles Catino Collection. The artwork from these collections include hand painted covers to her book Chords from a Dulcimore and several small hand painted postcards, and pencil drawings. Other art works include original art by former university art professors Frank Baisden and George Cress. The Special Collections also contains the Rare Book Collection, which includes many important works. Music items include the Early Music Choir Book, dating back to the 1600s and hand printed on vellum, and the Sheet Music Collection, as well as the Chattanooga Civic Chorus Records and original opera scores to operas composed and performed locally by former University professor Dr. Edwin Lindsey. The Anacker Drawings

Pencil and pen drawings of military scenes, possibly European. Believed to be from a collection of former University of Chattanooga professor, Robert Anacker.


The Art Book Collection
Scope and Content:

Limited edition art books from the 1970s and 80s. Many published in London. Most listed in library online catalog.



The Birds of America

Large prints of birds, illustrated by John James Audubon (1785-1851), reprinted in 1972.


The Robert Burns Collection

Pamphlets, clippings, journals and books related to the Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759-1796). This was the collection of Colonel Robert B. Cooke (1865-1942), a Chattanooga lawyer and founder of the Chattanooga Chapter of the Burns Society. Many of the books are housed in the Rare Book collection of the Special Collections.




The Jean Miles Catino Collection

Scope and Content:
Jean Miles Catino was the daughter of noted local writer, artist and naturalist Emma Bell Miles. Mrs. Catino lived in the Walden's Ridge area and had studied art in Chicago and was noted for various paintings and artwork. The collection includes family letters, correspondence, material relating to Elizabeth B. Patten, 2nd drafts of Kay Baker Gaston's biography, Emma Bell Miles, newsclippings, and photocopies of Emma Bell Miles' journals (1908-1917). Some material is restricted.




The Chattanooga Civic Chorus Records

Scope and Content:
Chattanooga amateur choral group (now defunct) directed by J. Oscar Miller, Voice Professor, Cadek Conservatory. Scrapbooks (1932-1950); programs, photos, and clippings (1930-1955).




The George C. Connor Collection

Scope and Content:
George Connor (1920-2002) was Executive Director, Chattanooga Adult Education Council (1952- 1958); Guerry Professor of English, UC and UTC (1959-1985). Letters from prominent authors regarding lectures in Chattanooga. Correspondents include C.S. Lewis, Richard Wilbur, Robert Penn Warren, Mark Van Doren, Arnold J. Toynbee and others. Photocopies of correspondence (1955-1964) between Connor and literary critic, Elizabeth Drew, mostly regarding development of a poetry study program for adult education. Photocopy of notes for October 9, 1950, Time magazine article about Robert Frost.




The Diamond Civil War Art Collection

Scope and Content:
Signed and numbered contemporary art prints of Civil War scenes by artist Don Troiani. Scenes include the battles of Chickamauga, Gettysburg, and Antietam.




The Mark Dugger Manuscripts

Scope and Content:
Nancy Dugger (1903-1987) received her BA from UC in 1925 and Masters in Social Work from UT Knoxville in 1953. Manuscripts (undated) of short stories and poems written by Nancy E. Dugger.




The Early Music Choir Book

Scope and Content:
Large, early music European choir book, in Latin, using early music notations, and hand printed on vellum. Some pages missing.




The Concha Espina de Serna Correspondence

Letters written in Spanish (1931-1955) to Terrell Tatum, Guerry Professor of Spanish, University of Chattanooga, 1924-1967 by Spanish novelist, Concha Espina de Serna.

The Gilbert Govan Collection

Scope and Content:
GIlbert Govan (1892-1978) was Historian, Library Director, University of Chattanooga (1934-1962); book review editor, Chattanooga Times; co-author with James W. Livingood, of histories of Chattanooga, the University of Chattanooga, and the Civil War. Notes on Chattanooga history from Chattanooga newspapers; early photographs of Chattanooga; speeches; correspondence, including letters from Donald Davidson; audio tapes and manuscripts relating to Chattanooga and the Civil War; and papers relating to the UC Library. Also material on the 75th UC anniversary, addresses by Govan, and a copy of the 1938 Army vs UC Football program.




The Isobel Griscom Collection

Scope and Content:
Isobel Griscom (1898-1980) was a Professor of English, University of Chattanooga (1922-1963). Photocopies of Griscom's poems collected and published in 1977 by her former students and entitled Isobel Griscom: An Appreciation. Included are scrapbooks of a) personal collection of school years at the University of Chattanooga b) postcards/photos of Europe, 1927 c) personal photos, 1913-1915 and d) personal photos and newspaper clippings. Misc. photographs and manuscripts also included.

The Mary Paroissan Letters

Letters in French (1924-1985) written by Madame Mary Paroissin to her friend, Mrs. Jeanne Brill Monefeldt.




The Shakespeare Print Collections

Scope and Content:
Over one hundred rare 18th and 19th century etchings, engravings, and gravures of various scenes from the plays of William Shakespeare. Many of the engravings are the result of the efforts of John Boydell (1719-1804) who established a London gallery in 1789 featuring paintings of scenes from Shakespeare's plays by many of the most eminent artists in Great Britain. Many of these were subsequently turned into engravings for folio editions published in the early 1800s. Another collection of these are printed on silk and framed.




The Sheet Music Collection

Scope and Content:
The Sheet Music Collection contains sheet music, mostly for piano and voice, for classical tunes as well as the popular songs from 1900 to 1970. Classical pieces include Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Debussy's Claire de Lune, Chopin's Polonaise, and Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C Sharp Minor. Popular songs include Jerome Kern's The Way You Look Tonight, Cole Porter's Don't Fence Me In, Noel Coward's I'll Follow My Secret Heart, and Irving Berlin's Why Do You Love I Hope.




The Mary Quintard Steele Collection

Scope and Content:
Prominent local author of children's books. Daughter of Gilbert and Christine Govan, and sister of Emmy West. Typescripts of her short stories and poems, including Pringle Story, Snail of God, Lost in the Jungle, and Kell by Herself (Wilson Gage, her nom de plume).




The Glenna Cliff Thomas Collection

Scope and Content:
Local artist known as Cliff Thomas. Collection consists of three scrapbooks: a) illustrations, undated; b) 2 scrapbooks of postcards, mostly from 1907 - 1911 and 1908 - 1913. Includes a letter from Richard Halliburton, 1938.




The Lula Ulrica Whitaker Collection

Scope and Content:
Lula Ulrica Whitaker (1902-1995) was a history, Latin, and chemistry teacher at Girls Preparatory School (Chattanooga) for 46 years as well as a local historian and artist. Seventeen letters (1934-1935, 1981) to Ulrica Whitaker from the "fugitive" or "agrarian" writers including Andrew Lytle, John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, John Wade, Frank L. Owsley, Donald Davidson, H.C. Nixon, Stark Young, Lyle H. Lanier as well as J.S. Hamilton from UNC Library. Letters were written in response to a request from UW regarding their contribution to the work, I'll take My Stand: the South and the Agrarian Tradition. Photos and some negatives of Chattanooga from the 1960's and 1970's.




The Bayard Wooten Photographs
