HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES WASHINGTON D.C. January 14th 86 My Dear Wilder, You have deeply touched my heart by sending me the gavel made from a tree where General Lytle fell at Chickamauga with the minie ball passing through it, and the handle from wood grown on Missionary Ridge where my division went over the enemys (sic) works. It has brought back a flood of thoughts and many tender memories. I feel very much touched Genl. Wilder by this interesting memento of great events & thank you my dear comrade friend for your thoughtful consideration of me. Yours Truely (sic), P.H. Sheridan
