Murfreesboro, Tenn. May 12th 1863 Dear Pet Your welcome letter reached me yesterday. I had just got back from a Guerrilla hunt of six day's (sic). We brought back 16 guerrilla's, killed six (guerrillas) & captured 64 head of horses- lost two horses killed. No men hurt. We broke up, and dispersed two gang's (sic) of desperadoes. I see by the papers that Hooker is after Lee, hope he will destroy the whole Rebel Army of Va. How I wish I was there with my Rangers, to help break up the R.R. We see that Gen. Burnside is after home Rebels. I do hope that he will hang Vallandigham (sic), it would do more for t he country than a great victory, and the Army would hail it as the beginning of a positive system of stopping treason, even if it is cloaked by the hypocritical claim of free speech. As well might a man be claim the right of free fowling in a powder magazine- as to talk treason in times like these. I do not like very well, to rebuild our house with wood. It will cost half as much as to rebuild new with brick, and then not suit me. I believe if I can get a brick house built for $1800, I will do it. Enclosed I send you a plan on which I shall build if I build with Brick, the main part will be two stories high, and the hall next to the one story part, where the new single cellar now is. The single flue for the two story part would be in the centre of the house, and need but one chimney. Each room both above &( below stairs would have a hole for a stove pipe open into th flue. In the wing a flue would be in the centre at the east end, all flues built in the wall, there would be no gables to any part of the roof. This would be the cheapest, simplest, and the most substantial and convenient house I could plan. All the rooms would be of good size, and the same up stairs as below. The wing would be one story, I think I can raise the money to build such a house, by having it built in a plain style, which I should prefer. I would like to know what such a house would cost, complete, ready to paper- painting all done. I wrote Mr. Forsyth about repairing the old one, but I wish you to show him this letter and have him see this plan before anything is done. My health is excellent. I am, as ever.
