I respectfully ask a leave of fifteen day’s from my command for the following reasons- On April 10 my dwelling house was burned, and my wife, and family of little girls are without a home. I wish time to provide them with a habitation and if I can, will return in less time than asked for.

I respectfully recall my application for leave, of 15 day’s absence, believing that it would be injurious to the service if granted, and preferring upon reflection, to suffer any loss, to leaving my post of duty even for a short time. My application is in the hand’s (sic) of Gen. Garfield.
