I saw General Crittenden yesterday and I (illegible) fear I may had (sic) offended you by mentioning in the press your remark about not feeling (illegible) to him & C. I did that to show that for (illegible) not speaking of him in favoritism and to give more favor to your opinion of his conduct and not my dear Col. (illegible) you in (illegible) to Crittenden, which understands. I should ever (illegible) the (illegible) minding of so brave and generous as yours even in my zealous anxiety to help my friend General Crittenden.

Col. will you do me the favor to give me the names of your officers who saw him on the battlefield of Chicamauga (sic) that I may apply to each of them for a statement of his conduct on that field? His friends in Kentucky are very anxious to here (sic) his name (illegible) from the bad insinuation made against him by (illegible) who had no reputation at stake and if you will give me the names of these officers I may address you will not only oblige me but confir (sic) a favor on his (illegible) of friends. I must also request if not too much trouble to you, that you write to your officers and request them to make a full and fair statement of his conduct on the field which fill (illegible…..)
