Overview: At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Lupton Library, collection development efforts (i.e., the selection of journals, books, videos, and musical recordings for purchase by the Library) are a collaborative effort between the Library and academic departments. Librarians and discipline faculty work together to ensure materials meet research and teaching needs. The Library's budget has two sections: serials or recurring costs (journals, databases, etc.) and one-time purchases (books, videos, etc.). The Library distributes 75% of its one-time purchase collections budgets to academic departments. Faculty members, in turn, are responsible for recommending titles they wish to see purchased for the Library. Process: While each academic department at UTC manages the process a little differently, each academic department names one member of its faculty as a liaison to the Library.
