Freedom unexercised may become freedom forfeited. Banned Books Week has been observed the last week of September annually since 1982. Its purpose is to promote intellectual freedom and recognize that this freedom cannot exist without being exercised. Reading a book that is being challenged now or has been challenged in the past with the threat of censorship is an act of support for the freedom to express and consider all ideas. It is organized and promoted by the following groups:
