The Barry Moser Collection

The Special Collections of Lupton Library has received two items from university alumnus and renowned illustrator, Barry Moser. The first is his two-volume illustrated Pennyroyal Caxton Bible (above, left), bound in velum and featuring Mr. Moser's wood engravings throughout. The Pennyroyal Caxton Bible had only 400 copies printed, and this one was donated by Mr. Moser in honor and memory of his mentor and former University art professor, George Cress. The second item is Mr. Moser's Portraits Portfolio (above, right), which features "one hundred and sixty-one portraits of friends, family, artists, architects, writers, poets, and composers, engraved on wood & Resingrave by Barry Moser from 1970 to 2006 and collected here for the first time." The portraits pictured above are, from top, clockwise: Geoffrey Chaucer, Eudora Welty, George Cress (former UTC art professor), and Charles Dickens. The Portraits Portfolio had only sixty copies printed. These items will be added to the Barry Moser Collection, which includes over 160 books illustrated by Mr. Moser. These include children's books, classics and cookbooks (see sample below).

Barry Moser-illlustrated books (above): Moby Dick, The Messiah, In the Beginning, Frankenstein, The Scarlet Letter, My Cats Nick and Nora, I Remember Grandpa, Dracula, Just So Stories, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.  Many of the Barry Moser-illustrated books were collected by English Department chair and Connor Professor, Dr. Verbie Prevost.

The books in the Barry Moser Collection are housed in the Special Collections and can be viewed in that department.
