Lupton Library Information Commons Librarian Position available: December 1, 2009 The Lupton Library seeks an innovative librarian with teaching, technology, and collaboration skills to join our Instruction and Reference team at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Library Description The Lupton Library is centrally located at the heart of the UTC campus. The Library staff is comprised of 16 librarians and 14 staff members, has an annual budget of just over 2 million dollars, and collection holdings of more than 500,000 volumes, over 2,500 active journal subscriptions, 120 databases, and over 28,000 accessible online journals. The Lupton Library offers 100 public computers, 10 group study rooms, and two well-equipped library instruction classrooms. The Library delivers a comprehensive range of public services, including proactive outreach, instruction, and reference. Recently completed projects include the development of an iPod-based library orientation program, implementation of a new open-url link resolver, rapid interlibrary loan service, instant messaging reference service and electronic reserves. Current projects include the development of library resource subject guides and a website redesign. The campus is about to begin construction of a new $48 million dollar, 180,000 square foot library to be completed in early 2012. This position will play a pivotal role in the planning and design of a new 150 seat, 12,000 square foot Information Commons in the new library. Department Description The Instruction and Reference Department supports the teaching and research programs of the campus community. The Department team consists of seven full-time librarians and one staff member working in an environment that stresses a progressive, collaborative and customer-focused approach to information services. The Reference Desk is staffed 80 hours per week. The Library’s Instruction Program is active and growing, and reaches over 6,000 students each year. Responsibilities of the Position Reporting to the Head of Instruction and Reference Services, this position will participate in the development of the Library’s Information Commons and engage colleagues throughout the library in the creation of innovative services and programs for students and faculty. The Information Commons Librarian will work to develop strategic partnerships with colleagues from across campus to provide students flexible space, information technology, student support, and programming designed to serve research and technology needs. Specific responsibilities include: • Coordinate day-to-day functions of the Information / Reference Desk. • Identify and develop programs and services that support the mission of the Information Commons. • Work closely with librarians, staff, and student assistants to ensure consistent high quality customer service. • Identify and incorporate emerging technologies into the Information Commons and library instruction program. • Participate in the Lupton Library instruction program including teaching course specific library instruction sessions, leading library workshops, and conducting one on one research appointments. • Serving one weekend day per semester at the library’s reference desk. • Being available for additional evening and weekend work as required. In addition this position has responsibility for regular reference desk work (approximately 4 hours per week), collection development in assigned subject areas, outreach activities, committee assignments and other library-wide efforts. Required Qualifications • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program. • Strong commitment to providing quality patron services. • Knowledge of student information needs, technology skills, and library use patterns. • Demonstrated proficiency with contemporary information technologies such as web authoring tools, content management systems (Joomla), course delivery software (Blackboard), graphics software (Photoshop), screencasting and video production software (Camtasia, iMovie), Web 2.0 and social software (blogs, wikis, RSS), and instant messaging. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff and students. • Solid organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy service environment. • Demonstrated ability to be flexible in a dynamic team-oriented work environment. • Preparation and commitment to conducting independent scholarship consistent with a tenure-track faculty appointment. • Commitment to engage in continuing professional development. UTC Librarians are expected to participate in library-wide and system-wide planning, University governance and service, and to be professionally active. Desirable qualifications • Demonstrated effective teaching skills, including the ability to design and deliver Library instruction sessions, an understanding of current trends in information literacy, and knowledge of instructional technologies. • Reference experience in an academic library. • Collection development experience Salary Salary: minimum is $43,000.00, commensurate with experience Rank This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-tack position with faculty status and academic rank. Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor.
