The Penelope Johnson Allen Papers
MS 002 .4 linear foot Date Range: 1805-1960
Scope and Content:

Local historian involved with Tennessee and Chattanooga historical activities. Directed a project transcribing Tennessee county records during the Depression. A leading authority on the Cherokees. The collections includes records of the Cherokee Historical Society (1930-1931); papers relating to the Brainerd Mission (c. 1817-1838), including newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, pamphlets, notes, and some original letters.




The Andrews Family Papers
MS 004 6 Linear feet Date Range: 1823-1950
Scope and Content:
Miscellaneous papers of the locally prominent Garnett Andrews family and related families of Washington, Georgia. Papers relating to the Civil War; commonplace book (1820's) belonging to Sarah M. Bowen; diary (1870-1872) of Eliza Frances Andrews (AKA Fanny Andrews and Elzy Hay) and an album of photos used in Eliza Francis Andrews' Wartime Journal of a Georgia Girl, 1864-1865 and papers relating to the Andrews family genealogy.



The North Callahan Collection
MS 070 12 linear feet Date Range: 1940-1985
Scope and Content:

Dr. North Callahan (1908-2004) was a 1930 graduate of the University of Chattanooga, and later received a doctorate from New York University. He was also a Lt. Colonel in the US Army, journalist, lecturer, historian, and author of over a dozen books on American history. In the late 1970s Dr. Callahan retired as a full professor from the New York University. The North Callahan Collection includes manuscripts of many of his books, reviews, lecture notes, tests, and related teaching material. There are also photographs, plaques and awards. In addition, Dr. Callahan donated over 1100 volumes of books dealing with American history to the library.



The Douglas Chamberlain Papers

Scope and Content:
Douglas Chamberlain (? - 1999) was a prominent local medical doctor and son of Morrow Chamberlain (President, UC Board of Trustees, 1932-1955), and grandson of Hiram S. Chamberlain (President , UC Board of Trustees, 1889-1897, 1898-1916 and President of the Roane Iron Company).

The collection includes a microfilm copy of the Roane Iron Company Minute Book (1867-1932); Resolution documents commemorating the death (1916) of Cpt. Hiram Chamberlain from Roane Iron Company and the National Association of Manufacturers. Newspaper clippings about Roane Iron Company and correspondence (late 1980's) regarding the receipt of the Roane Iron Company Minute Book. Daybook (1911-1912) of the Chamberlain Construction listing all contracts and expenditures for company specializing in concrete construction and owned by F.A. Chamberlain and H.E. Chamberlain (Donated by Auburn University Library Archives, 27 July 1996). Also, miscellaneous newspaper clippings relating to the flood of 1973, Ochs family and other Chattanooga events plus transcripts of speeches presented at the 1975 Bicentennial Forum and a speech by Judge Frank Wilson.


The Chattanooga Area Historical Association Collection

Scope and Content:

Includes postcards of Chattanooga from the early 1900's plus brochures and booklets about Chattanooga, including: J. J. The Chattanooga Area Library Association Collection

The Chattanooga City Engineer's Letterbook
MS 096 .5 linear foot Date Range: 1870-72
Scope and Content:
Letterbook by Chattanooga city engineer, F.T. Hampton. Plans include the design for what is now the downtown area around Market Street.



The Chattanooga Daily Rebel
MS 098 1 linear foot Date Range: 1862-63 (1890s)
Scope and Content:
Two copies of the historic Chattanooga Civil War-era newspaper, the Chattanooga Daily Rebel. These two copies are probably reprints, printed in the late 1800s as souvenirs for veterans' reunions.

The John Chauncey Collection
MS 010 3 linear feet Date Range: 1830-1950
Scope and Content:
John Chauncey was captain of a regiment in the Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. The collection, donated by his granddaughters in Chattanooga, includes parts of his Civil War uniform and personal effects, as well as papers and regiment records. Included are letters from Mexican-American War of the 1840s. Family pictures and mementos are included.


Civil War Etchings

Scope and Content:

Collection of Civil War drawings and artwork, many of which appeared in Harper's Monthly and Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. Some are hand-colored.


The Civil War Nurses' Letters

Civil War Quartermaster Reports

Scope and Content:

Daily reports of the Quartermaster Stores of the Union Army for the Chattanooga area.



Civil War Books and Regimental Histories
Scope and Content:
Over 500 books on Union Civil War matters and regiments, acquired in the 1950s as a result from an endowment from the Lily Foundation, in the memory of Chattanooga resident and former Union officer John T. Wilder, whom Eli Lilly served under during the war. Can be searched in the Lupton Library Online Catalog using the title: General John T. Wilder Memorial Collection.



The Clift Family Papers
MS 048 4 Linear feet Date Range: 1860s - 1920s
Scope and Content:
Papers relating to the family of Moses H. Clift (1836-1911). Contains Clift and Fain families genealogical material; miscellaneous photos, correspondence, clippings, and speeches relating to the Civil War, General A.P. Stuart, Confederate Veterans' affairs, and Chickamauga Park. Civil War artifacts include flags and banners. Moses Clift was the grandfather of actor Montgomery Clift, however, this collection contains no material about the actor.



The Colville and Paine Family Letters

Scope and Content:
Photocopies of typed transcripts of letters from members of the Colville and Paine families. Letters written by family members while serving in the Confederate Army in Tennessee and Georgia to relatives at home.



The Diamond Civil War Art Collection

Scope and Content:
Seventeen signed and numbered contemporary art prints of Civil War scenes by artist Don Troiani. Scenes include the battles of Chickamauga, Gettysburg, and Antietam.



The Oscar Easley Letters
MS 077 .5 linear foot Date Range: 1862-1864
Scope and Content:
Photocopied letters of Oscar Easley to his wife in Illinois during the Civil War, from 1862-1864. Oscar Easley was a carpenter with the Union forces on the Western front and served in Tennessee and Alabama.



The Arthur S. Forman Scrapbook

A scrapbook of news clippings (July 1925) about the Scopes trial.



The French War Posters

Scope and Content:
Twelve large French war posters from World War I.



The Carl M. Gevers Map Collection

Scope and Content:
Retired Colonel who served in World Wars I and II. Maps primarily of Italy and Austria during World War II.



The Hamilton National Bank Records

Scope and Content:
Former Chattanooga bank, later purchased by First Tennessee Bank. Miscellaneous scrapbooks, bank statements, ledgers, journals, and photos. Bulk of records housed in the Bicentennial Library. Given by First Tennessee Bank.



The Charles S. Harris Collection
MS 076 .5 linear foot Date Range: 1861-1865
Scope and Content:
Transcriptions of Civil War diaries of Union soldiers Jacob Cohn (Pennsylvania), Frederick N. Kollock (Pennsylvania), and Philip R. Ward (Ohio). Also includes photocopied excerpts, and other transcribed Civil War material. Donated by Charles S. Harris.



The Nat and Bucky Hughes Collection
MS 086 8 linear feet Date Range: 1861-1945
Scope and Content:
Notes, photographs, pamphlets, books and articles from local historian Dr. Nathaniel C. Hughes, Jr. The photography collection includes many Civil War officers. This collection accompanied a donation of over 1500 books on history, particularly American history, military and Civil War history, and literature. Many of these books were added to the circulating collection but some were added to the Special Collections due to their value, condition, or being signed by the author.


The Anne Bachman Hyde Collection
MS 021 10 linear feet Date Range: 1820-1958
Scope and Content:
Historian General of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; local history activist. Collections includes United Daughters of the Confederacy records; articles, pamphlets, and correspondence relating to the Civil War, the South, and Chattanooga; scrapbooks relating to Brainerd Mission; John Ross materials; and the papers of Charles Drake McGuffey, an historian and friend of Mrs. Hyde. Letter written to Sam Rhea ca 1820's regarding slaves in Tennessee returning to Liberia (typescript of letter created).



The Joseph Johnston Papers

Scope and Content:
Merchant, Madisonville, Tennessee. Papers (c. 1830-1890) relating to his store, including advertisements, trade catalogs, and invoices. Some letters relating to the Mexican War and Civil War.



The PFC Thomas R. Jones, Sr. Correspondence
MS 075 .5 linear foot Date Range: 1943-1945
Scope and Content:
The World War II correspondence of PFC Thomas R. Jones, Sr. while serving in the U.S. Army from December 1943-December 1945. The letters from Jones are to his wife, Mary Mildred Jones, living in Cleveland, TN. The letters deal with day-to-day war-time activities as Private Jones goes through basic training, and after he is shipped to Europe in 1944.



The Lookout Mountain Surveyor's Collection

Records of Gordon Kenneth McFarland, early surveyor of Lookout Mountain. Early Lookout Mountain documents.



The Thomas Maher Photographs

Scope and Content:

Thomas Maher is a great-grandson of General John T. Wilder. Photographs (reproductions) of General Wilder include him at Roane Mountain. GIven by Thomas Maher in 1992.


The Manker Collection

Land grants and deeds (early 1800's) from Alabama and Georgia.



The Cyrus Griffin Martin Collection
MS 030 .5 linear foot Date Range: 1917-1919
Scope and Content:
Local banker and lawyer with American Trust and Banking Company (1922-1960). Letters, vouchers and bank receipts (all from 1917-1919) from American Expeditionary Forces Officer, Cyrus Griffin Martin, starting at Fort Ogelthorpe in 1917 through his military tour in France, 1919.


The Reverend Thomas H. McCallie Memoirs
MS 027 .5 linear foot Date Range: 1901-1912
Scope and Content:

Presbyterian minister, Chattanooga and Hamilton County. Photocopy of handwritten memoirs, begun in 1901 and continued through his last years.


The William S. Mills Collection
MS 059 3 linear feet Date Range: 1900s
Scope and Content:

William S. Mills (1920-1997) was a graduate of the Baylor School in Chattanooga, and graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1941. He served in the Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and became the president of D.M. Seward Company in 1951, later becoming president of the National Ceramics Company. He donated to UTC books on Presidents Truman and Nixon; economics, the US intelligence community, Virginia Woolf and Tennessee Williams.

The Paul L. Palmer Memoirs
MS 032 .5 linear foot Date Range: 1917-1919
Scope and Content:
Professor of Education and Dean, University of Chattanooga,(1925-1965). Memoir of experiences while working for the YMCA at U.S. Army posts during World War I.


The Patten-Hyde Collection
MS 022 6 linear feet Date Range: 1940-1965
Scope and Content:

Salem Hyde (1905-1969) was a Cleveland, Tennessee insurance businessman and amateur archaeologist. His collection includes artifacts and pottery as well as correspondence, especially with Emilio Estrada, magazines and magazine articles dealing with archeology in the 1950s and 60s, books, photographs and slides relating to Latin America archeology sites. Given by Mr. Hyde in 1969.

The Raoul Family Papers
MS 082 15 linear feet Date Range: 1896-1977
Scope and Content:
Letters, papers, photographs and documents of the Gaston Cesar Raoul family, including his wife, Marion Haskell Raoul, and their son, William G. Raoul (1911-1997). Gaston C. Raoul (1874-1960) came from a prominent family from Atlanta, Georgia and Marion Alexander Haskell was part of a prominent family from Columbia, South Carolina. The letters deal with many aspects of these two families, and include the courtship letters (1907-1908) of Gaston Raoul to Marion Haskell , and their son William's World War II letters (1941-1945). Gaston C. Raoul was a Chattanooga businessman, who moved to Chattanooga in 1905. He was president of the Odorless Refrigerator Company and, later, the Chairman of the Board of the Cavalier Corporation, which was formed after the purchase of several other companies.


The J. Leonard Raulston Papers

Scope and Content:
South Pittsburg, Tennessee industrialist; civic and political activist; member, University of Tennessee Board of Trustees (1956-1979); and Sequatchie Valley historian, as well as author with James W. Livingood, of Sequatchie. Pamphlets, clippings, photos, photocopies of manuscripts for Sequatchie Valley and Marion County history and genealogy (transcripts of historical records and cemetery records); University of Tennessee materials; and Raulston family and early business records.


The Scopes Trial Collection

Scope and Content:
Material collected by Robert D. MacCurdy, Head of the Education Department, Centenary College in the 1960's. Includes a scrapbook and 2 booklets about the Scopes trial as well as relevant postcards and newspaper clippings.


The Southern Humanities Council Records
MS 039 5 linear feet Date Range: 1947-1985???
Scope and Content:
The Southern Humanities Council promotes the study and development of the humanities in the South. Coordinates activities of its members and encourages cooperation between business and academia in humanities work. Publications of the Council include: Southern Humanities Review and Humanities in the South. Contains the historical record files of the Council since its inception in 1947.


The Leroy Sullivan Papers
MS 040 .5 linear foot Date Range: 1941-1943
Scope and Content:
Leroy Sullivan was a University of Chattanooga student who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and was killed in action in 1943. Diary of war experience and letters to his friend, Grady M. Long, a former UC librarian who donated the material.


The Mary Louise Summers Collection
MS 041 .5 linear foot Date Range: 1932-1936
Scope and Content:
Mary Louise Summers graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1939 and served with the Army Special Services Club Program in Germany in 1946-1947, and also served with the American Red Cross in Japan and Korea. Includes the following books obtained by Ms. Summers while in Germany: The Olympic Games, 1932; The Olympic Games, 1936, 2.v.; and Germany Awakens: Birth, Struggle, and Triumph of the NSDAP.



The W.B. Suraney Scrapbooks

Scope and Content:
Scrapbook, from 1922, of newspaper clippings dealing with all types of crime. May be part of the University of Chattanooga Institute of Justice material.




The Robert Sparks Walker Collection
MS 081 30 linear feet Date Range: 1900-1960
Scope and Content:
Personal papers, manuscripts, books and correspondence of the Chattanooga naturalist, writer, poet, and historian. Mr. Walker wrote several books, including the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Torchlight to the Cherokees. Others include Lookout: Story of a Mountain, As the Indian Left It and The Bleechblock Circus. The collection also includes the manuscripts to his many articles and essays, as well as hundreds of poems.

Scope and Content:
Union officer during the Civil War, later businessman in Chattanooga. Mayor of the city (1871). Correspondence from the Civil War period, mostly to his wife. Some miscellaneous postwar papers. Correspondents include Rutherford B. Hayes, General Philip Sheridan, and Mrs. Benjamin Harrison. Some letters relating to the Wilder Brigade veterans' affairs and reunions. One wartime letter by John Hunt Morgan with endorsements by several Confederate generals.

The Nelson Wilder Collection

Scope and Content:

Photocopies of items pertaining to US Civil War General John T. Wilder (1840-1917) of Chattanooga. Items include correspondence, both war-time and post-war, documents, photographs, and newspaper articles. Given to the Special Collections by Nelson Wilder, great-grandson of General Wilder.
