The Lupton Library seeks a creative, energetic and highly motivated professional to lead our Access Services Department at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga.

Library Description


The Lupton Library is centrally located at the heart of the UTC campus. The Library staff is comprised of 16 librarians and 14 staff members, has an annual budget of just over 2 million dollars, and collection holdings of more than 500,000 volumes, over 2,500 active journal subscriptions, 120 databases, and over 28,000 accessible online journals. The Lupton Library offers 100 public computers, 10 group study rooms, and two well-equipped library instruction classrooms. The Library delivers a comprehensive range of public services, including proactive outreach, instruction, and reference.

Recently completed projects include the development of an iPod-based library orientation program, implementation of a new open-url link resolver, rapid interlibrary loan service, instant messaging reference service and electronic reserves. Current projects include the development of library resource subject guides, a website redesign and continued planning for a new $48 million dollar, 180,000 square foot library to be completed in early 2012.

Department Description


The Access Services Department provides UTC students, faculty, staff, and affiliates with reliable and accurate access to Lupton Library collections and facilities as well as access to materials not owned by Lupton Library through resource sharing endeavors. The department is consists of 2 full-time librarians and 7 full-time staff members working in a progressive and collaborative environment committed to service excellence. Access Services operates two public service desks, each of which is staffed up to 80 hours per week.

Position Responsibilities

Reporting to the Dean of the Lupton Library, this position provides leadership for the Library’s circulation, reserves, resource sharing, information programs, and security. Overall responsibilities include:

• Creating a team environment, supervising (directly or indirectly) 1 librarian, 7 full-time staff members, and approximately 25 student employees.
• Establishing and communicating Access Services performance and processing standards to staff and ensuring that these standards are maintained such that all services have a customer-centered focus.
• Staying current on relevant technologies and on emerging trends in Access Services.
• Communicating directly with library staff and patrons to resolve problems.
• Establishing, documenting, and revising Access Services policies and procedures.
• Assessing services and preparing necessary reports and statistics.
• Serving one weekend day per semester at the library’s reference desk.
• Being available for additional evening and weekend work as required.

In addition this position has responsibility for 1 to 2 reference desk hours per week, collection development in assigned subject areas, liaison activities, committee assignments and other library-wide efforts.

Required Qualifications

1) Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program.
2) Demonstrated experience in aspects of access services initiatives at an academic library.
3) Minimum of two years of leadership experience managing and supervising others.
4) Demonstrated strong commitment to customer service excellence.
5) Demonstrated aptitude and experience with relevant information technology (knowledge of VTLS Virtua and OCLC ILLiad preferred).
6) Proven communication and interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, students, and staff.
7) Demonstrated ability to be flexible in a dynamic work environment.
8) Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a complex changing environment.
9) Demonstrated ability to view issues from an institutional and library-wide perspective and to manage organizational change.
10) Commitment to conduct independent scholarship consistent with a faculty appointment.
11) Commitment to engage in continuing professional development.

UTC Librarians are expected to participate in library-wide and system-wide planning, University governance and service, and to be professionally active.

Desirable qualifications

1) A second advanced degree.
2) Experience in collection development.
3) Demonstrated proficiency with contemporary library and information technologies such as web authoring tools, content management systems, course delivery software (Blackboard), graphics software (Photoshop), screen-casting and video production software (Camtasia, iMovie), Web 2.0 and social software (blogs, wikis, RSS) and instant messaging.
4) Knowledge of copyright law and fair use within the library environment.

Salary

Salary: minimum is $45,000.00, commensurate with experience

Rank

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with faculty status and academic rank. Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor.

Benefits

Benefits include: 24 days vacation and 12 days sick leave per year; 11 paid holidays; 80% of health/life insurance paid by the state; choice of retirement programs which are paid by the state and equivalent to approximately 10% of an individual’s annual salary, partial relocation reimbursement, professional development funding, tax program savings, and more.
