Guidelines for High School Group Visits PDF Print E-mail

In order to ensure that students have a successful, rewarding, and educational research experience when visiting the UTC Lupton Library and, at the same time, ensure that we continue to provide excellent service for UTC students, faculty, and staff, area high school teachers are expected to:

  • Work closely with the high school’s librarian/media resource specialist to determine what materials are available at the high school library and encourage him or her to accompany the class to UTC.
  • Encourage students to complete initial research at their school library prior to visiting UTC’s Lupton Library. This research includes becoming proficient with:
    • Resources in the high school library.
    • TEL databases such as InfoTrac OneFile.
    • UTC online catalog (available at http://opac.lib.utc.edu).
    • EbscoHost databases available through the Chattanooga Hamilton County Bicentennial Library (students will need a public library card and user ID).
    • Other relevant, freely available Internet resources.
  • Discuss the specific assignment with a UTC librarian as well as what the students hope to gain from their visit to the Lupton Library that goes beyond the resources listed above. Please mail or email the proposed library research assignment to this UTC librarian prior to the Lupton Library visit.

When contacting a reference/instruction librarian (423-425-4510) to schedule an appointment, please keep in mind that instruction sessions must be:

  • Scheduled at least two weeks in advance of the desired visit date.
  • Held during UTC low use periods (e.g. mid-semester breaks, Christmas, etc.).
  • Limited to high school classes primarily at the junior and senior level (preferably AP).
  • Limited to 30 students who are accompanied by the class teacher and a school librarian or other adult. At least one adult must actively assist the students with research on each floor of the library where students will be working. Likewise, students will be expected to remain on the same floor(s) with their teachers or chaperones while in the Library.
